Platform Migration
Broom-Peltz Consulting
Rebuilt broompeltz.com from Squarespace to a custom Next.js site on Vercel, using Cursor and Claude Code to iterate in public and dogfood the same migration work I do for clients.

broompeltz.squarespace.com/The problem
The Squarespace site worked, but I had outgrown the template and the monthly platform bill. More importantly, I was advising clients on custom builds, platform migrations, and AI-assisted workflows while still running my own brand on the tooling I was helping them leave. I needed a site I could iterate on the same way I ship client work: in git, in public, with room for real case studies.
Before
Squarespace marketing site: template constraints, page-builder iteration, and monthly platform hosting cost.
After
Custom Next.js site on Vercel Hobby: code-owned content, preview deploys, and hosting reduced to the domain renewal.
Approach
Treat the rebuild as dogfooding. Archive the Squarespace site as the before state, redesign around clearer positioning, and rebuild on Next.js + TypeScript + Tailwind with Vercel Hobby so hosting cost drops to the domain alone. Use Cursor and Claude Code as daily collaborators for layout exploration, components, portfolio data structure, and iterative polish, not as a one-shot redesign. Ship in loops: homepage, work, about, contact, then deepen the case studies.
Process
- 1
Motivation
Framed the project as practice, not vanity: do the migration and AI-assisted build process I sell, learn the sharp edges first-hand, and keep the old Squarespace site as a public before reference.
- 2
Inventory
Captured brand assets, portfolio imagery, and page structure from the Squarespace site so the rebuild preserved what still worked while leaving room for a stronger work system.
- 3
Stack decision
Chose Next.js App Router, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, GitHub, and Vercel Hobby so deploys stay previewable and hosting stays free beyond the ~$15/year domain.
- 4
AI-assisted build
Worked primarily in Cursor and Claude Code to explore layouts, implement components, structure project and case study data, and tighten SEO without waiting on a traditional handoff cycle.
- 5
Iteration
Shipped in stages: core pages first, then portfolio filtering, before/after case studies, and copy refinements as the site started doing real work as a sales and reference tool.
- 6
Cutover
Pointed broompeltz.com at Vercel, kept Squarespace live as the previous site for comparison, and continued iterating under the same workflow clients would experience.
Outcome
Live custom site at broompeltz.com on Vercel Hobby (free hosting) with domain cost only (~$15/year). Git-based deploys, structured case studies, and a working proof point for the AI-assisted migration process I offer clients.
